At David Nieper Academy, our mission statement is to ‘develop the leaders and achievers of the future’ by bringing the workplace into the classroom and offering a curriculum that celebrates both the academic and the vocational. Central to this mission is our vision for Careers and Employability as part of the academy experience. Namely, all students will raise their aspirations through their engagement with an outstanding Careers and Employability Programme. You can view our Whole-School Careers and Employability Programme here.
The government sets out a long term plan to build a world class careers system that will help young people and adults choose the career that is right for them. The aim is to make sure that all young people in secondary school get a programme of advice and guidance that is stable, structured and delivered by individuals with the right skills and experience.
To achieve this aim, the careers strategy sets out that every school and academy providing secondary education should use the Gatsby Charitable Foundation’s Benchmarks to develop and improve their careers provision. By adopting the Gatsby Benchmarks, we are providing secure, independent careers guidance and information about technical education qualifications, higher education and apprenticeships.
The eight Gatsby Benchmarks of Good Career Guidance are as follows:
- A stable careers programme
- Learning from career and labour market information
- Addressing the needs of each pupil
- Linking curriculum learning to careers
- Encounters with employers and employees
- Experiences of workplaces
- Encounters with further and higher education
- Personal guidance
