During PE lessons pupils develop the confidence to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It provides opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. We believe in giving all pupils the opportunity to discover and develop their physical potential through a balanced and developmental programme of activities. We deliver lessons in belief that physical education is performed in a safe, supportive and challenging environment and which allows students to build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.
Years 7, 8 & 9 – Core PE
In Years 7 and 8 pupils follow the National Curriculum. They will build on the physical development and skills learned in key stage 2 and become more competent, confident and expert in their techniques and apply them across different sports and physical activities. Within lessons students develop an understanding of what makes a performance effective and how to apply these principles to their own and others’ work.
Years 10 & 11 – Core PE
Pupils tackle complex and demanding physical activities. They get involved in a range of activities that develop personal fitness and promotes an active, healthy lifestyle.
Years 9, 10 & 11 – BTEC Sport
This qualification is the same size and level as a GCSE and is aimed at anyone who wants to develop their knowledge of, and skills in, health, fitness, activity and sport. Students learn about the body systems, psychology, nutrition and leadership. Students will also explore how the development of technology is enhancing sport and activity. This qualification provides the underpinning knowledge for progression in the sector and is a broad offer. Students will develop an understanding of sports injuries, as well as investigating the physiological responses to exercise. The course will also help to develop key skills required when working in the sector, such as self-reflection, teamworking, communication, decision making and problem solving.
How Parents/Carers can Support Learning at Home
- Ensuring students complete their homework to the best of their ability.
- Supporting their development of practical skills by encouraging and supporting their involvement in sport outside of lesson time (for example helping them join a local sports team).
